Gillies and his team was greatly aided by the initial ‘stabilisation’ of facial injuries by dental surgeons such as Valadier and
Varaztad Kazanjian. Regarded in the USA as ‘the miracle man of the Western Front’, Kazanjian was a dentist with 2 years at medical school who was appointed as Chief Dental Officer of a Harvard University medical unit based in France. This unit became the first British Army maxillofacial treatment centre in France.
